Crate.io Named a “Cloud Enabler” in Microsoft 2017 Growth Accelerator

SAN FRANCISCO. Crate.io, developer of CrateDB, a leading open source SQL database for real time analytics of IoT and machine data, was named a “Cloud Enabler” in Microsoft’s 2017 Berlin Growth Accelerator. Only ten of 300+ applicants earned a place in the program, through which Microsoft provides technical guidance, support in business development and an Azure credit of $500,000.

“Crate.io stood out because they solve a real business problem in the IoT space,” said Iskender Dirik, Managing Director for Startups/ Microsoft Accelerator. “Its database optimizes for flexible queries and rapid ingest, making it a great solution for factories, car fleets, building management – anything with lots of sensors involved. We’re excited to see their offering join the Azure ecosystem.”

Microsoft Growth Accelerator is one of the top programs of its type worldwide, with its 500 alumni having raised a total of $3 billion in venture capital since their participation. Forty two have seen successful exits, including three IPOs and 38 acquisitions.

CrateDB is an open source SQL database that enables real-time analytics for machine data applications. CrateDB makes machine data applications that were previously only possible using NoSQL solutions available to mainstream SQL developers. Its unique capabilities are enabled by the following innovations:

  • Distributed SQL query engine for faster JOINs, aggregations, and ad-hoc queries Columnar field caches and a fully distributed query planner enable CrateDB to perform complex queries in real time and overcome many of the performance and flexibility limitations of first-generation distributed SQL databases.
  • SQL with integrated search for data and query versatility CrateDB is a unique combination of SQL and search technology, which enables a wide range of analytics, including machine learning and predictive analytics, on time series, full text, JSON, geospatial, and other structured and unstructured data without having to use different database engines to do so.
  • Container architecture and automatic data sharding for simple scaling Database scalability is vital for handling variations in machine data volume, but this is normally difficult to do. CrateDB can run as a cluster of containers, which enables it to be scaled easily with Docker, Kubernetes, or Mesos container platforms. In addition, CrateDB automatically shards and redistributes data across the cluster as it changes size to optimize performance and high availability.
Crate.io will use its win to add Azure as an option for customers using its Managed Service Deployment offering. This flexible deployment option will allow enterprises to offload database administration responsibilities to the foremost experts in CrateDB use and management, helping to ensure maximum uptime and efficiency.

“The Growth Accelerator will give us deep interaction with Microsoft’s ecosystem of partners and customers in Europe and the U.S., many of whom we can work more closely with through platform integration,” said Christian Lutz, founder and CEO of Crate.io. “This relationship will also enable us to leverage Microsoft’s business and technical expertise to enhance development of an Azure deployment options for our managed service deployment option.”
