CrateDB Operator Is Now Red Hat Partner Validated for OpenShift

The CrateDB Operator, which offers a convenient way to run CrateDB clusters inside Kubernetes, is now Red Hat Partner Validated and listed on the Red Hat Ecosystem Catalog.

OpenShift is Red Hat's enterprise Kubernetes platform for building, deploying, and scaling containerized applications.

What Does the CrateDB Operator Do?

CrateDB is a distributed SQL database for storing and analyzing large volumes of data in real time, built for time-series, IoT, observability, and analytics workloads. The CrateDB Operator runs and manages CrateDB clusters declaratively on Red Hat OpenShift. With the operator, you describe a cluster in a single custom resource, and it handles the rest: provisioning, safe scaling without data loss, rolling upgrades, persistent storage with in-place expansion, and clean teardown. Platform teams can operate production-grade CrateDB on OpenShift with standard tooling and GitOps workflows.

Every node also exposes Prometheus-format metrics out of the box. The operator is open source under the Apache 2.0 license.

Why Does OpenShift Support Matter?

OpenShift is stricter about security than vanilla Kubernetes, and for good reason. Each CrateDB cluster runs under a dedicated per-cluster SecurityContextConstraint bound to its own ServiceAccount, with no cluster-wide privileges, and respects Pod Security Admission. In practice, your security team can review exactly what CrateDB is allowed to do, and nothing else on the platform has to change. The OpenShift guide in our documentation covers the details.

What Does the Red Hat Partner Validation Cover?

Red Hat Partner Validation is Red Hat's program for software vendors to show that their products work on Red Hat platforms. We define and run the tests, document the results, and attest that we have tested the operator with the listed OpenShift version and support it there. Red Hat reviewed that attestation and published the listing.

Version 2.64.1 of the operator, running CrateDB 6.4.4, passed all nine of our lifecycle test scenarios on Red Hat OpenShift 4.22.11, an Extended Update Support (EUS) release. The tests cover the full lifecycle: installation, scaling, recovery from pod and zone failures, storage, upgrades, monitoring, and removal. If you want to see the test plan and results, the full validation report is public in our GitHub repository.

What Does This Mean for You?

  • Lower deployment risk. The operator has been tested end-to-end on a supported OpenShift release.
  • Faster due diligence. Your platform and procurement teams can check the official Red Hat listing instead of running their own compatibility review.
  • A clear support statement. You know exactly which combination of operator and OpenShift version we support.
